Hobie's Desk

October 13, 2025

HOBIE'S DESK

Hi Camas Families,

We are full on into October! Camas Ridge Students are quickly learning about all of the routines and rituals that their classrooms have, as well as creating community in the classroom and into the building. As we transition into this new school year we are really looking forward to Community Time (CT) starting again, we will begin CT - with two days a week for a transitional period and then move into four days a week on December 1st, 2025. Both staff and students are looking forward to one of the core pieces of what makes Camas Ridge great- CT.

At Camas Ridge, we focus on our values of being Welcoming and Safe. In these early weeks, students are practicing what this looks like—cooperating with others, using safe bodies, and following routines. Each day we model, remind, and celebrate their progress as they grow in confidence and care for one another.

Upcoming School Events

October 27-31st Fall Spirit Week
Our fall spirit week will happen the last week of October. As a reminder that licensed staff worked hard last year to come up with celebration agreements that would prioritize instruction, connection and also hold to being as inclusive as possible. These efforts of our licensed teaching staff are supported by Principal Hobie. One such way of celebrating is through a spirit week
Monday 10/27 - Falling for Books
Wear fall colors (orange, red, yellow, brown).
Share your favorite book on a paper leaf for a hallway tree
Tuesday 10/28 - Tall Tale Tuesday
Wear plaid or flannel.
Read tall tales and even make up some of our own
Wednesday 10/29 - Wonderful Word Wednesday
Wear something with words on it.
Explore fun fall words together.
Thursday 10/30 - Leaf Through a Good Book Thursday
Wear green or leafy patterns
“Leaf” through a good book with a buddy
Friday 10/31 - Rainbow of Reading Friday
School Spirit Day
Each grade (or class) adds colorful “book spines” or “word strips” to build a giant school rainbow of reading in the hallway

Celebrations and more at Camas-

At Camas Ridge Community School, we celebrate all types of diversity. Our families share the common goal of providing their children with a progressive and academically engaging education.

Last school year, our staff (licensed teachers) worked together to review our practices so that families clearly understand how we celebrate and honor special days at school.

We envision a school community where every student feels a strong sense of belonging, receives a culturally responsive education, and are prepared for future success. Our motto—Wonder, Explore, and Grow—guides us in creating learning experiences and traditions that nurture curiosity, creativity, and community.
More than just a set of guidelines, Camas Ridge is building a movement to support and uplift every student, with a special focus on underserved groups:
  • Asian students
  • American Indian/Alaska Native students
  • Black/African American students
  • Hispanic/Latino students
  • Multiracial students
We are committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment where every child is valued and celebrated.
How We Celebrate at Camas Ridge
Birthdays
  • Students will receive a short recognition such as cheers, a song, or an affirmation during the day.
  • We ask that families not send in gifts, treats, or food for birthdays.
Classroom Celebrations
  • Classes may celebrate with special items from home or fun apparel days (like pajama day).
Holidays
  • Families will have the opportunity to complete a beginning-of-year culture survey to share important traditions with us (optional).
  • Teachers may introduce students to less represented cultural or religious holidays through stories or learning activities. These will not be “party-style” celebrations.
  • To keep our focus on community-created traditions, we will not host classroom parties centered on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, or Easter.
Other Celebrations Teachers May Choose:
  • Seasonal changes
  • Activities connected to our Camas Triangle of Values
  • Celebrations inspired by Conscious Discipline (Celebration Center-A place to highlight your child’s accomplishments, whether big or small, traditional or unusual, academic or social, milestone or everyday event.)
Together, as we Wonder, Explore, and Grow, we’re excited to continue building traditions that reflect the diversity, creativity, and spirit of our Camas community.
Jogathon – Wednesday, October 15
We’re excited for our annual Jog-a-thon Fundraiser this next week on Wednesday, October 15! This fun, energetic event promotes fitness and school spirit while raising funds to support school programs and activities.

Walk & Roll to School Day – Friday, October 17
Get ready to lace up your shoes or hop on your wheels! Our school will be participating in Walk & Roll to School Day on Friday, October 17.
This event encourages students and families to walk, bike, scooter, or skate to school; promoting healthy habits, reducing traffic, and supporting a cleaner environment.
This year our buses will give students an opportunity to walk from the south parking lot at Amazon Park. Students who are willing and able will be dropped off at 7:30 at the site. Principal Hobie and other staff members as well as volunteers will walk students up to Camas Ridge. We will get to the site by the first bell (7:50am).
Students who do not want to walk will still be able to get dropped off at school as normal.

Lockdown Drill  – Wednesday, October, 22, 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We would like to inform you that Camas Ridge Community School will be conducting a practice
Lockdown drill on Wednesday October 22nd, at 12:30pm.

Drills are for staff and students, and are educational opportunities to practice life safety
skills. For example, evacuation drills/fire drills are conducted at schools regularly. A fire
The alarm goes off, students line up and head outside. Since there is no simulation of a
threat or hazard, these cause less trauma while imparting important skills and muscle
memory.
Lockdown drills are similar. There is no simulated violence needed to conduct
them. The only information needed is for the protocol to be enacted, “Lockdown, locks,
lights, out of sight,” and then students and staff perform the proper functions.

For all our drills, we use the I Love You Guys- Standard Response Protocols (SRP).
We
encourage you to look at the I Love You Guys website to educate yourself on what it is.
And, if appropriate, to share what you’ve learned with your child. https://iloveuguys.org/The-Standard-Response-Protocol.html
The safety and well-being of your child is our top priority at Camas Ridge. We will continue to keep you informed about important concerns at our school.
Please contact Principal Hobie  if you have any questions.

A quick reminder from the front office:

  • If your student will be absent, please call the attendance line at (541) 790-8825 before 8:30 a.m.
  • If you need to change how your child is being picked up, please leave a message on the attendance line before 12:00 p.m. so we have time to get messages out before the end of the day.

Thank you,
Principal Hobie
